Check a Contractor Before You Hire

Go through the checks to make before hiring a contractor: registration, licence, insurance, references and a written contract.

Contractor Province or territory

Checklist The legal business name on the quote matches a registered business. The contractor holds any licence your province or city requires for this work. You have seen a current liability insurance certificate. The contractor has workers' compensation coverage or a clearance letter where required. You checked recent references or reviews for similar work. The contract is in writing, with scope, price, schedule and payment terms. The contract says who gets the permits and inspections. Payments are tied to completed stages, not mostly paid up front. The warranty on work and materials is in writing.
